Well, here’s something we never thought we’d see,
A Shaolin festival
that venerable publication, The National Geographic, in its the March issue offers an article entitled “Battle for the Soul of Kung Fu”. Besides photos of the TaGou school, the pagoda park and some splashy snapshots, the article chronicles some of the tensions created by traditon clashing with ideology. To quote the article, “Shaolin has helped foster a Kung Fu renaissance, coinciding with China’s own resurgence.” In many ways that could have read “colliding with”. 
From MMA to Contemporary Wushu we more and more see martial arts as being pushed by cultural values which have little to do with the arts themselves. 
Not a deep piece, but essentially accurate and bringing many people to an appreciation of the art for the first time.
