Any time we get to add a new translation from Andrea Falk, we celebrate. Her work is always thoughtful and firmly based, and one never gets the feeling that the translation is machine-generated (because it isn’t)!
Now, about the book, The Tiger Crane Form: Chinese -English Edition of Lin Shirong’s book, revised by Zhu Yuqi. I don’t think I know many longtime martial artists who do not have a copy of this classical text in their library. Many copies are ratty at this point, often with pages falling out giving testament to both the quality of the publishing and the number of times it was pulled out for use. But I can also say with some confidence that none of those copies is as well-translated or beautifully put together as this new book by Sifu Falk. The drawings themselves (cleaned up) are so iconic that we once found a set of coasters in a gift shop in Sonoma using four of the poses.
The English translation itself is accompanied by the original Chinese, plus there is a Mandarin-English glossary at the back.
A perfect library addition.
