MI ZONG Lost Track Boxing Page Three

The flavor of Mi Zong is "indeterminate" with many changes, turns and reversals in this essentially Long Fist Northern Style. Rare in the West but very famous indeed in China.  The style was most popularly associated with Huo Yuan Chia the inspiration of TWO famous Kung Fu films: Bruce Lee's Chinese Connection and Jet Li's Fists of Legend. Master Huo was said to be fabulously strong and was picked to head the world-famous Ching Wu Association of ShangHai.

Demonstrator: Liu Jun Qi, 9th generation inheritor of the style.

VCD#1374 Mi Zong "Tiger Head" Double Hooks
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

Quantity

We very much like th Tiger Hooks ("Heads", due to an old misunderstanding of the original name). But this one lacks a certain vitality. On the plus side it is a very rational form eschewing the type of fancy movements which have now substituted for real knowledge of the weapon. Applications are shown against saber movements.

VCD#1375 Mi Zong Impetuous Wind Double Saber
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

Quantity

A good double saber set with a whiff of the indeterminancy of the style. Applications are shown against another double saber weilder and this is a useful view on the usage of the weapon. As always, footwork is primary to the degree that the feet are montiored through every step of the form. Overall the sabers are well coordinated with little attention paid to decoration and most to the general skills of the weapon. We would have liked to see a more directed application of the striking and following relationship of the two hands.

VCD#1376 Mi Zong Big Dipper 36 Movements
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

Quantity

Here is a Mi Zong hand set that is broken down into applications. This does give some flavor to the set but the applications are in the line of "Move fourteen against a hair grab." That is the aspect we would like to see more of is the flavor of the style. Of course, as far as flavor goes, ninety-five percent of good Kung Fu is indistinguishable. But the remaining portion should demonstrate the theme and approach of a particular style.

Double Rods

VCD#1377 Mi Zong Double Rods
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

Quantity

We have the feeling that people will like this form. The rods, like the cane, are not edged and therefore actually allow for more angles because they don't need to be directed as accurately as, say, sabers. So the form is interesting, loose and light with some nice whirling moves and some interesting angle changes. Don't expect escrima, this is a Chinese interpretation with the weapon a little heavier and more geared to fighting other weapon with blades such as the double swords used as foils for these applications.

Lost Track Kung Fu Double Hammers

VCD#1378 Mi Zong Double Hammers
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

Quantity

Mi Zong, which is a large and old style, has many forms. This student of Mr. Liu's shows a relatively fast version of the double hammers, a fairly rare set. The hammers here weight about three ounces so don't look for straining muscles. As is appropriate the actions of a double weapon are hardly distinguishable from any other double weapon WITH a few movements considered characteristic of the particular instrument. Applications are shown against other weapons .

Lost Track Kung Fu Double Swords

VCD#1379 Mi Zong DaMo Double Swords
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

Quantity

It's not that often you see a twin sword set where the horse stance is this often appllied. The reason is that rarely are the sword sets this vigorous. Mr. Liu's student gives a rough and ready performance. It may not be the most beautiful twin swords we have every witnessed but there is not even a whiff of art for art's sake with all the primary movements such as thrust, peng, liao, hack, intercept, etc demonstrated first and then applications against double sabers supplied.

Lost Track Kung Fu Pu Dao

VCD#1380 Mi Zong Pu Dao
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

Quantity

Ah, now we have it. The best weapon of this series presentation. This is a fast, fluid and authoritative Pu Dao set with even a surprise or two. The applications are simple and straight forward but utilize that special character of the weapon. The set is learnable, relatively complex but clean and nicely performed. Not contemporary Wushu but fast and changeable enough to intrigue the modern eye.
