Chi (Qi) style TONGBEI Boxing

Demonstrator/Teacher: Shan Chang Wen.
Chi Family Tongbei is one of the oldest forms of TongBei we know. In mid-Ching times it was taught by Lu Yun Ching to Chi Hsin. From this we have the Chi family branch which is taught in Hebei Province. Lu's other disciple was named Shi and these were for a long time the dominant branches. Chi Tai Chang's son, Chi Hsin taught in Hebei during the late Ching. Though called Chi style it was later renamed Tong Bei. Chi's son, Chi Tai Chang, developed the techniques so much further that there are still two styles of this lineage, one from the father and another from the son.The other branches still around are represented by our VCDs on White Ape TongBei and 5 Element Tai Chi TongBei. All TongBei technique retains martial usage and especially emphasizes one of the key principles of WuShu, namely the unification of the spine to all generation of power. TongBei movements are loose yet crisp and powerful. A beautiful style and one of the most solid groups of performers we have listed among our many VCDs.

(SanShiLiu Shou ZhuChi) It's one thing to enjoy watching the many styles we offer at Plum. Its another to really catch the essence of a particular method. Some styles, like TongBei, Pi Gua and BaJi require almost a renovation in the thinking of the practitioner. In this case VCDs like this one, where simple to intermediate movements are done and then shown in usage, are very important. At this level, the "basic" and separate actions take on characteristic expressions of the style's nature. In this VCD they are not only shown such that one might practice them but shown with variations hinting at their flexibility and variation . A Double VCD.

TONGBEI BOXING
(5 Element Tai Chi Through-the-Back Fist)

Demonstrator/Teacher Zhang Ji Zong is a 3rd generation inheritor of Tai Chi 5 Elements TongBei Fist. Aided by Wang Xue Qiang, 4th generation holder.

Tai Chi 5 Elements TongBei Fist was organized at the end of Qing Dynasty & establishment of Republic of China, about 100 years ago, by master Zhang Ce . Tong Bei itself is a very old style with a complex history, appearing and disappearing from the martial scene over the centuries. At one time it was considered one of the best styles in WuShu. Different branches, of which this is one, have split and banded back together especially for the last 150 years. This Tong Bei is quite authentic in its power generation following Tong Bei's traditional principles which are so widely accepted as to make them part of all Northern Fist. (Note: It is important to understand that while master Zhang has one VCD demonstrating Tai Chi Push Hands in this series that the TongBei VCD's are simply TongBei. "Tai Chi" (Great Extremes is here used much as "Wu Xing" as a technical, not stylistic term.)

These are the key motions to express that. And, as always, we love the relationship between Master Zhang and his students as they engage in heated Q & A. This is a FIVE DISK set. If you think that five disks is excessive for 30 moves his examples are so thorough you could actual learn from them. Five VCDs.

WILD HORSE RUNNING TO ITS TROUGH is the one of TongBei's most famous routines. It shows the style's characteristics of cold, crisp, quick and forceful. When practicing you should "stamp your feet noisily" , "push your strength", "the body like a monkey's", "walk quicker than a tiger" and "stand stable as a mountain" The Wild Horse form is lively and a good representative of TongBei's moves some of which actually resemble a spirited horse. Very loose spine motions direct power out to the arms. The interplay between Master Zhang and his student is worth the whole price of admission. These VCDs introduces usage for every action in the form. Taiji Five-elements Arm-through Boxing a formidable system and excellent for health. Chuo Jiao is now identified with Fan Tzi of Tumbling Boxing so expect a few cartwheels from Zhang's competent student. Is there a "Shaolin" style Chuo Jiao. The records say Yes indeed.

These Push Hand Techniques are passed on from Yang Jian hou, the third son of the founder (Yang Lu chan), to Zhang Ce - founder of the Taiji Five-elements TongBei style - then to his disciple Zhang Yi qian and finally to ShihFu Zhang Ji zong. Yang Push Hands utilizes the 8 essential energies of T'ai Chi: shed (Ward Off) , parry, squeeze, press, elbow, rely (Lean) , poke and shoulder. True Push Hands develops "Listening" as one of the most important of T'ai Chi skills. In this VCD practice methods are detailed along with usage of Single pushing, Double pushing, steps fixed and free. It is rich in contents and precious for teaching!

TONG BEI or Through-the-Back Boxing has many branches. It is also an extremely influential style throughout the Kung Fu world. One might even say that Tong-Bei Jin (Through Back Energy) is an attribute of each and every style of Kung Fu - just like Reeling Silk Energy. This is another branch of this family. Please remember, though, it is almost impossible at this time to know which is the "authentic" or "original" style. What is important, though, is that Tong Bei has much to offer to any interested WuShu practitioner. All the demonstrations are by Zhao Jian-Guo, student of Zhang Ce one of Tong Bei's top teachers.

Also, in this set, there are just open running sequences where the practitioner covers a whole lot of ground. This VCD is solely applications with no form. Tong Bei, traditionally, is a style with a lot of fighting applications. As we see with Tzu Ran, Cjuo Jiao, Pi Gua and others there are actually a lot of style mantaining their fighting usage. This VCD really lives up to its name. It is Tong Bei's specific training on Breaking open the door and entering with palm actions. These attacking patterns accomplish two things at least, the first is that they engage the opponent and the second is that enter his door before laying down a strike (generally a palm action). Four VCDs all dedicated to the application of the Tong Bei style. Many gambits here. Even more than some of the demonstrations, this VCD shows Tong Bei's particular use of Yin and Yang. Almost a platitude when describing all Chinese Martial Arts this series of examples beautifully shows the idea of "one hand clear and one hidden" with many and varied changes penetrating but utilizing the Yin/Yang of both hands changing one after the other and straight mixed with round. Practice versions are also shown for group and individual practice. Tong Bei's most highly guarded set for this branch. This is a 4 VCD set.

TONG BEI Boxing (Hong Dong Branch)

TongBei movements are loose yet crisp and powerful. Tong Bei itself is a style and, at the same time, a principle - one of the chief principles of Kung Fu. Tong Bei means "through the back" and refers to the idea that all movements should unify and compound the power of the limbs through integration. Tong Bei has, at times, been considered one of the greatest of Kung Fu styles. At present it is scattered somewhat through a number of lineages and, despite efforts in the 20th century to reconstruct the style, still spans a number of branches we have in VCDs including White Ape, Five Element and Chi Family Tong Bei. This form of Tong Bei is named after a general of the Song Dynasty who, while not necessarily the founder, is one of the first people actually recorded as knowing the style.

Demonstrator: Xu Tian Xiang is the 9th generation inheritor of Tong Bei Quan. Info about the art of Tong Bei.

The rolls and turns of this set, such as the back turning roll, make it interchangeable with a staff form. Chen Zhen Hong.

Even for a Contemporary WuShu version and even considering the style itself this is almost a WILD form. Running, whipping punches, windmills, high speed and lots of real estate. You MUST have loose shoulders and trained arms so we wouldn’t suggest starting with this if you have never had and Pigua or Tong Bei training. If you like whip punches like the kind found in Choy Lai Fut, this is the form for you. A long form that captures the explosive and spontaneous character of the style. As the English text states, Tong Bei incorporates the SPIRIT of the White Ape more than the shape.

That's right, the saber is switched from the right to the left hands and back again a number of times. The overall performance of the set is definitely a mark above the average in these disks. Every style has a characteristic weapon and saber is perfect for Tong Bei. The performance in the beginning puts it all together then teacher Zhang breaks everything down.

VCD#1359 GREEN DUCKWEED SWORD
About an hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

Quantity

If there is a weapon Mantis likes, it is the sword. If there is a sword, it is the Green Duckweed. Like Kun Wu Jian, the Duckweed is a well respected weapon for retaining some of the meaning of Chinese fencing.Did the Duckweed sword come from Dragon Tiger Mountain, from Taoist forebearers? Who knows? We have to say, respectfully, that while no amateur, Shifu Li's performance was a bit stiff. His movements are very fluid but he holds the sword a trifle stiffly. On the other hand, when the tassel wrapped his wrist, he showed the sign of the professional and used the set itself to unwrap it. If you've never had this happen you have no idea how annoying it can be.
