An extraordinary addition to the Praying Mantis library of Wong Han Fan. In that year, he compiled a batch of advanced routines that were rarely taught. This set is one of them. os the name suggests, this is the beauty of routine sets. As clearly stated in the "Introduction" of this book: The reason why there are so many sets in Praying Mantis school is that through the practice of them, "one can learn more about the different compositions of moves, changes, obedience, left and right, and front and back. At the same time, it can also ignite the motive of further practicing, so that learners often have new changes and new understandings." Frequent practice might lead to understanding out of a sudden. The entire set is laid out, one photo per page opposite the instruction for that posture (click book image to see an example). On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Master Wong, this legacy is made public to the public. |

In this book, the historian and mantis master Wong Hon Chiu (Wang HanChao) shares his research on Ming dynasty war strategies and how they relate to Mantis Kung Fu. He also talks a bit about the form Yao Ling Kuen (Rou Ling Quan). Although the book is entirely in Chinese, he adds a 3 page abstract in English. In addition to text, there is a sizable section at the rear (almost 100 pages) containing photos of usage and techniques, as well as Wong Han Fun performing "Four Road Rushing Strike." Wong Sifu is the author of "A Discourse on the History of the Praying Mantis Boxing for the Last One Hundred Years." Although this book is entirely in Chinese, he adds a 3 page abstract in English, from which we loosely summarize: "I keep the 1st chapter of the previous book in this one as a background for the research. In the beginning of the second part of the book I explore the 16 main schools of martial arts masters and the Sung and Ming dynasties, comparing them with the 18 masters recorded in the classical praying mantis doctrine. "One section worth mentioning is the influence of martial arts doctrines on the later development of the martial arts circle. They are doctrines of the 32 styles of long hand fighting technique, Spears, cudgels, rattan shield. "In the third part of the book, I deal with issues in martial arts, historical as well as contemporary. For example, the 24 techniques of searching-horse fighting and their relationship with praying mantis boxing. Also, the controversial issue of the 18 volumes of Chi-Hsiao Hsin-Shu that have been mentioned in Ch'i is examined "In the appendix, I explained the difference between Ch'i Chi-kuang's and T'ang Chien-She's short distance hand fighting technique. Furthermore, present evidence that praying mantis boxing and the long hand fighting of Tai Tsu are both based on the use of quick movements "Finally, I interpret the meaning of Tan Ma (knight fighting and searching-horse style) as the technique of cudgels and Spears as described in Ch'i's book." |

of the Praying Mantis Boxing for the Last One Hundred Years,” one of the best books on Praying Mantis Kung Fu. Sadly, it became unavailable and our want list for it grew. Happily, this new book, “The True Biography of Mantis Boxing,” not only includes the original text, but adds another 240 pages to gorgeously expand the history back to its origins, about 300 years ago, and Wang Lang, the presumed founder of this great style. Offering more than 200 pages of photocopied Boxing Manuals, this "True Biography" links Mantis's origins to Shaolin. It would be hard not to be impressed by this exceptional volume. Divided into three sections, the first roots the basis of the style in the classical Shaolin system. Wang Lang, as legend goes, originated the style which slowly expanded into a model and goal of a "perfect" system. The importance of the Ching Woo (Jingwu) schools in popularizing this system cannot be underestimated, and much detail is given to Luo GuangYu, and his famous disciple Wong Han Fun (Huang HanXun). From these schools and teachers, Mantis grew to thousands of students. This would make for an impressive text as is, but the addition of historical sketches, all in color, plus historic calligraphic texts, raise its level to art. Photographs of masters abound, including those of Luo GuangYu and many of Wong Han Fun, showing both empty hand and weapons work. There are even a few demonstrating Praying Mantis’s unique Chin Na. Finally, as in the original text of the Discourse, there are 15 English-language pages with a table of contents, plus a summary introduction to that text.
