{"id":4522,"date":"2010-12-08T21:40:16","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T05:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/?p=4522"},"modified":"2010-12-08T22:04:04","modified_gmt":"2010-12-09T06:04:04","slug":"memory-guan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/2010\/memory-guan\/","title":{"rendered":"Memory Guan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Being at the center of a lot of email correspondence, I learn from many customers about their experiences in the arts. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/teapot1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4530\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"teapot1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/teapot1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"134\" height=\"117\" \/><\/a>Sometimes it&#8217;s just a line, sometimes a whole story. Though not something that most people talk about, studying martial arts is a very personal experience. Teaching yourself to learn a form, physically interacting with others, becoming a part of a school and its community&#8230;all of these things are as important as the memorized techniques, idiosyncratic uniforms, and cool j<span style=\"color: #888888;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ump kicks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of our long-time correspondents recently sent me this recollection and I thought it would be nice to share it:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Funnily enough yakking on has dislodged an old memory of when I was<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">formally training.The club was on the first floor of an old victorian<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">red brick building.The floor was wooden with bare brick walls to which<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">mirrors were fitted at either end of the room,which was about 60 feet<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">long and about 30-40 feet across. I was friendly with our instructor<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">and him me and another lad, Dave, used to do the Sanchin kata<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">in the middle of the floor, and when we tensed at the end of each<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">move, the mirrors used to vibrate.
