Nothing too radical, but the catch is that I feel this should be universal and it is hard to convince such a contrary crowd as my cohorts about anything universal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I propose, simply, that every style of martial training should engage in what I call Touch Sparring.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-16024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro7.jpg\" alt=\"art_modpro7\" width=\"180\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro7.jpg 288w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro7-200x174.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>By this I mean anything of the sort like Push Hands, Sticky Hands, White Crane Sparring, Mantis Hand sparring, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As you can see, a few styles already use some form of Touch Sparring. And others \u201cborrow\u201d from their neighbors\u2013which I think is just as acceptable if done correctly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-16021\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro4-260x300.jpg\" alt=\"art_modpro4\" width=\"165\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro4-260x300.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro4-173x200.jpg 173w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro4-433x500.jpg 433w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro4.jpg 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 165px) 100vw, 165px\" \/>I am definitely <em><strong>NOT<\/strong><\/em> advocating some universal Touch Sparring that spans all styles. This would be, in my opinion, a grave error. I am suggesting that, even for the most health-oriented, personal achievement or even just plain introverted styles, Touch Sparring will be a boon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Why? Most people would answer, \u201cself defense, of course.\u201d And, of course, I echo &#8220;yes&#8221; to that; but I have other, larger benefits in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16027 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro10-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"art_modpro10\" width=\"209\" height=\"139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro10-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro10-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro10.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Touch Sparring gives <em><strong>feedback<\/strong><\/em> on important aspects, such as distance, angle and intensity. This training is about staying in some \u201cdis-comfort\u201d zone and sticking it out. It is an incredibly clever activity for its purpose: to re-program your automatic responses until you are no longer having to visualize your actions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16022 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro5-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"art_modpro5\" width=\"154\" height=\"176\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The variables are almost infinite. You can practice striking, grappling, pushing, grabbing, footwork, whatever. Some of the best sparring is highly concentrated: using only one hand, weapons vs. hands, repositioning, etc. This is a perfect way to develop specific abilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">One of the dangers to Touch Sparring is that it is so much fun. People want to practice it all the time. Of course, it is the tactility that fascinates them. Unlike what they think at the beginning, few people know their own natural <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16025 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro8-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"art_modpro8\" width=\"198\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro8-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro8-200x162.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro8.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">responses. Touch Sparring allows them to see how much of their responses actually backfire and go against themselves. You can talk to a student for months, but having them zig when they should have zagged\u2013even just once\u2013clarifies the concept really quickly. Touch Sparring is direct experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16024 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro7.jpg\" alt=\"art_modpro7\" width=\"199\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro7.jpg 288w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro7-200x174.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/>It substitutes sensitivity for force. This is based on the teacher\u2019s insights and abilities. One of the most difficult things in martial arts sparring is to keep students from rigging the game. I don\u2019t even mean intentional cheating, just the natural human tendency to \u201cadjust\u201d to the rules. Each type of Touch Sparring should be regulated to equalize variables that would skew the practice. Once that is done, partners of uneven abilities, strengths and training can work together. Cheating skews the scores, though.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-16018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro1-300x279.jpg\" alt=\"art_modpro1\" width=\"186\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro1-300x279.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro1-200x186.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.plumpub.com\/kaimen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/art_modpro1.jpg 363w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/>Nature is self-correcting, according to Daoist teachings. Touch Sparring also is self-correcting. If we make sure that it doesn\u2019t become a little personal duet of well-groomed quirks shared by just two people, it will always expand, educate and enlighten.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Teachers! If you don\u2019t have this tool already in your style, you should make one. Research, experiment, then add the distinctive features of your branch.
