Things are changing in the world of martial media: during Plum’s tenure, we’ve experienced a renaissance in martial literature and publishing. But, following on its heels, we’ve also witnessed the boom in online/downloadable/streaming material which, like all explosions of this type, offers both blessings and curses. A blessing: You may get a scratchy, black and white glimpse of your great-grand-teacher doing Bajiquan in his backyard. A curse: Anyone (and we mean anyone) can be an “expert” now, and it costs nothing. Discernment is everything.
This public sharing impacts the more traditional methods of knowledge transference and conversation. (We won’t even get into what this means in terms of training with a teacher.) At Plum, though, we are seeing this play out in a number of ways, the most striking being the ‘retirement’ of reliable sources of traditional media, not to mention that many books and videos that were around for years are suddenly no longer available. (Yes, there are bootleggers that pop up, but we have always stayed away from that.)
This is all to say that this could be the last of some of the books, DVDs and especially VCDS you find on Plum. We are doing our best to keep the pages updated, but during our busiest time of the year, things change quickly.
Of course, that’s not to say that we don’t have some brilliant new additions to our catalogue! We especially want to call attention to Sifu Donald Hamby’s Tiger and Crane Sparring Set, which comes directly from Grandmaster Lam Cho. To say that this book is a labor of love (as well as great instruction!) is to still fall short of describing all that went into it. And you can check our weblog to see other exceptional titles newly added.
