Yun Men (Yun Style) and 6 Harmonies (Liu He)

Yun Sect of Kung Fu was developed in the times between the Ming and Qing dynasties. It combines Liu He Boxing with Plum Blossom styles. Like Mei Hua , it was a style associated with revolutionary activity in China and some of its most talented teachers had ties to the Yi He Tuan (The Society of Harmony and Justice). After a defeat at the hands of the Qing one Zhao Ming Shan sought refuge in Shao Meng Village with one big land owning family. He protected his employer's compound and taught his skill to his his early students including Gao Kai Di ,Li Peng Fei, and Guo Bang Xun .Guo Bang Xun, an early inheritor of skill, passed it to his disciple in Cai Zi village: Li Guo Rong, Li handed down to his neighbor, the official Ma Shuo Yuan. Li Wen Jing and Lao Ma were neighbors. Starting at 7 years of age, Li began following Lao Ma. He practiced martial arts with him for the next 20 years. Some of Yun Style's distinct practices:
扇缠顶, 提跨拦, 头出袖, 裹脑偏, 拳打连利, 冠脚全.

Demonstrator: Li Wen Jing is a "old time" boxer: organic, soft, refined. Though no doubt not as strong as he was in his youth his movements show a practiced sensibility.

Yun Style 8th Root Move and Block Hands
In the history of Kung Fu there are many forms which are simply lines of marching fundamentals. There are some, ourselves included, who feel that forms were slowly developed from these “marching basics” over centuries of development. In this case the basic 8 “roots” of the Yun style are shown and then very clearly demonstrated. These moves are traditional and actually of a little higher quality than so many of the “real fighting” applications. Solid work.

Six Harmony Kung Fu Double Swords

VCD#1537 Yun Men Liu He Double Straight Swords
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

Li Sifu is quite at home with the double swords and his performance, which is long and involved shows, much control with the instruments. This is a set for someone who is already advanced and even familiar with, at minimum, the single hand straight sword. Even though, as it should be, the theme of this weapon is continuity and footwork it does no display the rarified grace we often associate with "women's straight sword": a combination of dance and martial performance.

Six Harmony Kung Fu Steel Whip

There is performing the whip and performing the whip. One of the distinctions lies in the transitions. In contemporary whip work they are seamless, smoothed over and fluid. This is really beautiful and, essentially, not very useful because, if you actually ever tried whip, you would realize that it can go anywhere and you have to be able to rather gracelessly control its path. This routine shows not only the rehearsed and smooth transitions but the edgy and more realistic ones and, of course, while circling two steel whips simultaneously.

Mei Hua Fist is a very interesting traditional style of Kung Fu. As we have pointed out in other places, it is often associated with the history of the Tai Ping Civil War. This is a nicely done set with refined energy and the organic, almost awkward appearing movements of someone who has practiced a long time in the cultural context of traditional Kung Fu. This is a long form with many poses an repeated movements. It is done pretty softly and bears some resemblance to Cha Chuan in its flow, angles and Long Fist motions. Many hook hands and Luo or grasping moves. Classic Long Fist.

Six Harmony Kung Fu Sword

The straight sword can be a ho-hum experience, but not in this case. Here is a long, complex and challenging set. It is done "long tassel" style which renders it a specific weapon unlike standard straight swords. There is a definite emphasis on spinning, tassel turning and whirling actions. Li's skill is deep and consistent and organic. Yes, he is a little older but he's been practicing his art for decades. One of the most complex sword sets we have, widely varied.

VCD#1541 Yun Men Plum Blossom Saber
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

Mei Hua Saber. This classical set shows a traditional medium sized form with strong saber movements and some occasional angle changes rarely seen. We have viewed literally thousands of sabers. There's very little difference because saber basics are rooted in actions formulated over 1500 years ago. But, as in this case, some of the old, more traditional sets show relatively unusual applications and actions because they have not yet been homogenized. If not the taste of real usage, at least it memory.

VCD#1542 Yun Men Er Lang Boxing
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

This is a road of the Liu He system. It has a wide rang of Long Fist movements with many stepping patterns and changes. The angle changes are almost as complex as Lost Track with hand strikes and elbow actions at unusual angles. The slow controlled actions show the traditional emphasis of this form.
