SHUN style Boxing
Demonstrator/Teacher:
Hu Chun Guang is the fifth generation inheritor of Yue Shun Family Boxing.
This is a composite style developed during the Qing Dynasty, in Hebei province. It was created by Feng Wan He and passed to Tang Shan stylist Wang Rong Chang. The word "Shun" means convenient, to follow, comfortable and smooth. It is often used to connoted "flowing". This style is said to use the word as a guide such "Shun" at it's core with "Shun Qi", Shun form and Shun force generation. The main branches are taken from the names of more famous styles and exemplify important actions and concepts but not necessarily resemble their "parent" styles. So for hardness, for instance, Shun uses Mei Hua style, for softness Bagua: but not the circle walking Bagua we associated with the name. Overall the style is quite graceful. The sets are complex and many of them have won first place in national competitions.
NOTE: We are suggesting that, since this style is fairly rare, to buy the survey first and see what you think. We have selected some representative forms which we can rapidly special order but those in blue we will keep on stock as best we can. We consider these "best of breed".

A rather complex and longish form in the classic Long Fist tradition and not necessarily a Bagua Zhang set ("Bagua" may just refer to the 8 directions). More emphasis here on complexity of movements, angles and some issuance of power and less on poses, stretches and twirling. A wider differentiation of fast and slow with some sections resembling Tai Chi as much as anything. Double handed strikes and some tightly twisted but explosive actions.

VCD#1703 Shun style Bagua Palm #3

There is so much emphasis in this form on palm maneuvers that it somewhat resembles Snake Boxing at times. Seemingly based on the Press move of Tai Chi, this wide open Long Fist set has multiple attacks with palms from a variety of angles. Footwork is elegant and agile. The performer should feel comfortable with quick dropping to the ground and light legged stances. A long form though not as long as some of the others. |
VCD#1704 Shun style Bagua Palm #1

First, don’t assume that “Bagua” refers to the commonly understood style. Bagua, meaning basically Eight Directions, is a name used for forms in many styles such as Choy lai Fut, Xing Yi and others long before the style was created. In the Shun style we have THREE “Bagua” sets. This first road is a long set with some truly amazing spins and full sit down into half lotus style positions. Definitely for a young, limber practitioner. Many beautiful poses. A few spins an hand spirals indeed representative of what most people think of as Bagua. The name of the style “Shun” may imply easy and graceful but there’s hard work in these long sets.. |
VCD#1705 Shun style Bagua Saber

Interesting saber with emphasis on strong cuts. Much wrapping practice, hard jumps, a lot of spinning. A decent saber set with much appeal due to its continual motion. NOT performed in a circle. The most salient feature is that the spirit of the set is strong and tigerish, as saber should be. . |
VCD#1706 Shun style 6 Harmonies Boxing

Six
Harmonies Boxing is a routine of the Yue-style Boxing. It is a core
set of the Yue-style Boxing. What are called the Six Harmonies are
essential concepts of all WuShu. The three outside harmonies include
the hands corresponding with the feet, elbows with knees and shoulders
with hips. The three inside conformities are that the mind conforms
with the will, the will with Ch'i and your Ch'i with your a focused
strength. Six Harmonies Boxing can be characterized as forceful,
extensive, gracious and compact. Move like a swimming dragon, keep
stable like a lying tiger, dodge quick like a sly rabbit, be flexible
like a monkey, stay light like a crane and become heavy like Tai shan
Mountain. This boxing has a lot of secret attack techniques. Each
technique contains yet more skills hidden. |
VCD#1707 Shun style Plum Blossom Spear

Quick, medium length spear set. Some nice rolls, an unusual roll around the neck, jump overs, flips, tosses and more quick and crowd pleasing actions. A nice demonstration set but, ultimately, not overburdened with content. |
VCD#1708 Shun style Mei Hua Boxing #1
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
special orders may take a few days extra
A huge, elaborate, ornate form that one moment resembles Cha, another Lost Track. Definitely Long Arm and not unreminiscent of Shaolin with particularly elegant sections, spinning, sitting in the half lotus drop, many twist stances, circle walks, reversals of position. A beautiful and long form with many passes and an unusual number of rare postures for a Long Fist set. |
VCD#1709 Shun style Mei Hua Boxing #2
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
special orders may take a few days extra
If the Bagua Palm series in Shun style is its soft side then the Mei Hua is its hard though certainly not hard compared to some styles. This form seems based on the Tile Palm and shows many applications of it along with Tan Tui like passes including kick and palm combinations, Long Arm whirling whip punches, angles changes with accompanying footwork and some very quick turns and drops. |
VCD#1710 Shun style Mei Hua Boxing #3
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
special orders may take a few days extra
Thrusting palms and fingers, light steps, some lightning fast spins, Long Arm poses and strikes are the main ingredients of this third road of the Mei Hua Plum Blossom branch of the Shun style. This whole series resembles little so much as Cha styles not only with its wide open stances and stretched out arms but also its light and changeable rhythms. The three Mei Hua forms give a full range of strikes and body work for a Long Arm system. |
VCD#1711 Shun style Mein Quan Cotton Fist
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
special orders may take a few days extra
Though this a pure Long Arm form don’t expect a lot of kicks. The few there are follow the classic lines of crescents, tornadoes and brooms. This is a wide open form in the style of Tan Tui, Cha, Hong or any Northern Fist. The movements are mostly performed in roads with many twist poses, sprightly jumps, beautiful poses, palm techniques and repeated sequences of Xing Yi style cannon type punches. Actually a long and refined set with graceful lines. |
VCD#1712 Shun style Ten Row Legs
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only

This is the Shun style Tan Tui which is quite sophisticated with multiple hand motions, shaking jing, off-angle steps and wide stances and somewhat exaggerated movements, even for Tan Tui. Interesting as a late developed form and, of course, fitting well into the overall style of the Shun system. |
VCD#1713 Shun style Swallow Penetrates Forest

This looks like an almost impossible to duplicate series of actions walking back and forth somewhat like following a circle. There are so many changes and hand striking movements but so many repetitions that you could go mad trying to learn this one. But we’ve figured it out for you. This is a Nine Palace form following the pattern of going from pole to pole in a series of basics constantly adjusting to each of nine positions. |
VCD#1714 Shun style Moon Tooth Spade
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
special orders may take a few days extra
Without a doubt one of the most impressive demonstrations of this weapon and vastly superior to most of the Shaolin weapons presentations of similar instruments. The spade is a flat tool at one end and a crescent blade at the other. This balance allows beautiful fluid movement and easy rolling. A very long and involved master form for this weapon with gorgeous open postures, fluid passes and some excellent timing shown as hesitant and controlled steps. |
VCD#1715 Shun style Yue Family Ba Shi
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
special orders may take a few days extra
This is a very interesting form. Yue style is, according to legend, created by the famous patriot Yue Fei. Eagle Claw and Xing Yi, among other styles, have been attributed to this patron of the arts. This form, a member of the Sun style but claiming in the title to be from the Yue clan, is something like a Xing Yi for with roads of repeated actions, slow and fast mixed, and grabbing actions followed by Xing Yi type explosive actions followed by more sophisticated and soft actions. This may bear some study. The movements are nothing like Mein Quan in this style. Possibly an historical remnant of true Yue style. |
