Fu Xi Style Ba Gua Boxing

Fu Xi is the semi-mythical emperor said to have developed the orginal Trigrams where are the basis of Chinese philosphical views. This form of Eight Trigrams Boxing is also called, "First Heaven" or "Pre Heaven" Boxing. It first concentrates on developing the student's strength, coiling energy along with basic weapons and combat skills. The instructor is Gao Ting Yi.

Here's the thing. If you were not told this was "Ba Gua" Boxing you could never know by looking at this 74 year old teacher's forms. They are short, very old fashioned and simple and essentially linear. In short we like them but many people might be disappointed at the complete lack of resemblance to anything in their heads. It is true that there are linear forms in Ba Gua but these would almost qualify better as Shaolin forms (actually more authentic than much claiming to come from the Temple) than anything else. Both the teacher and his older student demonstrate the breakdowns though some movements might be as simple in execution as a single block. For those who want to see a "new" old style rarely seen.

Here is another linear form that moves up and back. It resembles Three Star Cannon Boxing, or Tan Tui. The actions are extremely simple, organic and straight forward. This "student" is an older man, as is the teacher, so don't expect super speed or special effects. All the kicks are at mid-shin level. Breakdown for this second road emphasize these kicks a good deal. Long Arm motions with strong stances, some Long Arm and some powerful straight punching. Not pretty, but sincere.

This third road emphasizes the alternation of fast and slow even more than the previous sets. Much like BaJi or Xing Yi, the movements are singular, slow and powerful. In application we begin to see the special characteristics of the style which include jamming motions and motions which interrupt the attack with the immediate counter. Posture are held, balance underscored, movements with strong intent though very simple and traditional in appearance.s

The fourth set of this rare style shows the same austerity of posture as the earlier sets but adds more rapid footwork and one rather impressive retreating jump near the conclusion of the form. Breakdowns are more complex but still use the primary ingredient of interception and counter-striking. Classic postures such as "Strike the Tiger" give the effect of ancient illustrations, old poses. Similar to other old forms such as Cannon Fist but with its own distinct structure.
