First,
be advised that all of these VCD's are IN
CHINESE ONLY. In our opinion that doesn't matter much
because the instruction is clear and the quality of photography
very good. But we will not accept returns just because people didn't
read... IN CHINESE ONLY. Given
that, these are really tremendous deals for the money. Each of these
special VCD's can be played on a computer for full enjoyment. Made
for PC's they are also Mac compatible by downloading Quick time (for
free) and any similar VCD player program. Also playable on most
DVD players. For less than $10.00? Wow! |
Through
the Back: TONG BEI Boxing
(Hong Dong Branch)
TongBei movements are loose yet crisp and powerful. Tong Bei itself
is a style and, at the same time, a principle - one of the chief
principles of Kung Fu. Tong Bei means "through the back"
and refers to the idea that all movements should unify and compound
the power of the limbs through integration. Tong Bei has, at times,
been considered one of the greatest of Kung Fu styles. At present
it is scattered somewhat through a number of lineages and, despite
efforts in the 20th century to reconstruct the style, still spans
a number of branches we have in VCDs including White Ape, Five Element
and Chi Family Tong Bei. This form of Tong Bei is named after a
general of the Song Dynasty who, while not necessarily the founder,
is one of the first people actually recorded as knowing the style.
Demonstrator:
Xu Tian Xiang is the 9th generation inheritor of Tong Bei Quan. Info

This
is the Master set of this branch of Tong Bei. It contains nine sections
which together total 108 movements. Each section could be a self-contained
Tong Bei form. The movements here are generally much larger than
those of the other sets in this sect. Demonstrated by ShihFu Xu
and her pupils. Taught by Shih Fu Xu. This
is four VCDs |

Tong
Bei Iron Shaft Fist
About
1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
This
is one of the key sets to the Hong Dong version of Tong Bei. The
movements are fast and strong. Shih Fu Xu demonstrates and teaches
the form. The implication is that the turning arm is like a rod.
This "seed" form has a cascade of the major elements of
the style with hand combinations utilizing such key actions as An
(press) and Lan (barricade).

Bei 42 Move Staff
Double
VCDs , VCD pricing, Chinese Only
This
set has much staff "throwing." Very fast and showy set
with many wide whipping moves. Demonstrated by a male, one of Madame
Xu's students but taught by Xu Tian Xiang herself. To our eyes a
bit of contemporary WuShu posing but still a fast and furious set.

Tong
Bei Single Sword
About 1 Hour,VCD pricing, Chinese Only
A
rather fast and flashy sword set smacking of the contemporary touch.
We somewhat doubt that heritage of the set though there are many
nice touches and fast sections with cloud stepping, multiple pokes
and turning drops. Looks best on someone young. Instruction by ShihFu
Xu herself.. |
VCD#1029
Tong
Bei Double Swords
About 1 Hour,VCD pricing, Chinese Only
A
double sword set demonstrated by one of Shih Fu Xu's students. A
very quick form with flashing action and a contemporary feel. Complex
movements and an emphasis on spinning and stretching actions.

Tong
Bei Hook Swords
About 1 Hour,VCD pricing, Chinese Only
Shih
Fu Xu herself demonstrates and instructs this Tiger Hook Sword set.
As always the hooks are an advanced task in coordination of both
hands. This set has most of the classical movements including the
"linked swords" and "flowers." |
VCD#1034
Tong
Bei Whip
About 1 Hour,VCD pricing, Chinese Only
By
"Whip" we mean a short stick approximately from the heart
to the ground. This is also a relatively short set with much use
of the flicking motions. The stick is held about twenty per cent
up and the counter balance of the whip is the exposed butt end which
aids in the speed of the retraction. Light movements, fast actions
but, overall, about an intermediate level. This and the next three
VCDs are all instructed by Chen Zhen Hong.

Tong
Bei 10 Linked Legs
About 1 Hour,VCD pricing, Chinese Only
This
is the single person version of the following set, #1036. Not uncommonly,
the single set is complete in itself and can be practiced as such.
This is a relatively short set with an occasional ground scissors
kick, elbow turns and other actions familiar to aficionados of two
person sets. With the following VCD quite learnable. Chen Zhen Hong.

Tong
Bei Linked Legs Duet
About 1 Hour,VCD pricing, Chinese Only
Actually
this VCD contains TWO sets. In addition to the partner version of
the 10 Linked Legs it shows Grasping the Dragon at Sea Bottom. The
first half is the two person breakdown of the previous VCD #1035.
The explanation is explicit and shows the choreographed partner
version of the set. The next set is short but pretty dynamic. There
is a distinctive mixture of short snappy strikes and fast footwork.
In this sense this all resembles Chi Family Tong Bei more than any
other represented in this group. Chen Zhen Hong. |

Tong
Bei Two Weapons
About 1 Hour,VCD pricing, Chinese Only
This
disk gives you twice as much for your money. It contains a short
Tong Bei Saber set. This weapon appears more traditional than some
of the others in this series. The practitioner knows what to do
with his left hand, a requirement of saber. The spear, on the other
hand, is more than intermediate and is actually a pretty nice little
set with probably more spear kicking than we've every seen in one
form. The rolls and turns of this set, such as the back turning
roll, make it interchangeable with a staff form. Chen Zhen Hong.
