Southern Shaolin Series: LUO HAN Those
familiar with arts like Karate and Kenpo will like this series.
It shows the structure and movement of strong, fluid FuJian Southern
Style motions. No doubt exists but Fu Jian area was one of the major
inspirations for the creation of what we now called "Karate."
There is a nice flow to the movements and the demonstrator knows
what he is doing. Each VCD in the series shows APPLICATIONS of the
techniques. This branch of Southern Shaolin is known as Luo Han
(LoHan) which signifies a disciple of Buddha. Luo Han is also a
code word. It almost always refers to strong, direct techniques
which might be described as the beginning of Shaolin as a specific
style. Luo Han is something like "proto-Shaolin." This
holds true of this brisk, strong and no-nonsense style Click on pictures to see larger versions. |

Shaolin Three Rectitudes This is as close to a Karate form as you are likely to see on this site. The movements are Southern style which means, among other things, relatively short arm, accompanied with breath control, with few kicks and solid but not overemphasized stances. The teaching here is excellent with a demonstrator who knows the applications and is anxious to tell about his fighting knowledge. Though a little "harder" the set should not be looked down on. Good, clear and interesting presentation. By the by, the "Three Rectitudes" are eyes, body and feet. |

Shaolin Eight Steps Still a definite Southern style form with cat stances, horses and tight hand motions. APPLICATIONS are shown for every section in the form. There is much research now on the origins of Karate from areas around Fu Jian province. This shows true Chuan Fa (Boxing) emphasis with respectable power and techniques all shown with clear motions. The form is strong and sophisticated with breath control and explosive power in parts. |

Shaolin Four Gates This form, in the shape of a cross, shows sophisticated hand exchanges and angular attacks. Very little kicking but there are some moves concentrating against someone on the ground. Dragons Head Fist, Tiger Claws and other typically Southern style moves are shown. APPPLICATIONS are demonstrated. Small hand circling with cutting and threading movements abounding. |

Shaolin Fourteen Words This is the most advanced of this series on Southern Luo Han Shaolin Boxing. The movements here shown in form and APPLICATION have a lot of variety in stance and execution. Many nice Short Fist motions with drop stances, cat stances and twist stances. Grappling and striking are more tightly wound together here and there are more, though still not many, kicking actions. A strong set but one with a lot of techniques and changes.
