First,
be advised that all of these VCD's are IN
CHINESE ONLY. In our opinion that doesn't matter much
because the instruction is clear and the quality of photography
very good. But we will not accept returns just because people didn't
read... IN CHINESE ONLY. Given
that, these are really tremendous deals for the money. Each of these
special VCD's can be played on a computer for full enjoyment. Made
for PC's they are also Mac compatible by downloading Quicktime (for
free) and any similar VCD player program. Also playable on most
DVD players. For less than $10.00? Wow!

Southern
Style SHAOLIN Boxing (Ying Branch)
Southern
Shaolin is of course somewhat different from the Northern branch.
Generally speaking there is less emphasis on kicks, especially of
the jumping variety. Southern Shaolin has a distinct timing that
floats between soft, whipping motions and sudden stops. The hands
move constantly with sophisticated and unusual hand positions often
requiring an "educated" wrist. Specific finger techniques
are also shown. This particular branch is based on Eight Words or
Characters. Many of the sets are based on two linked characters
and emphasize those specific skills in execution. Some very beautifuland
intricate hand motions are to be found here.
Instructor/Demonstrator: Huang Jin Gou Was born in 1954 in Jiang
Xi. He is a Ying Men Fist 4th generation holder He has studied Shaolin,
Tai Chi and Ba Gua understanding the merits of each. In 1980 he
began competing in tournaments many times winning places.

Shaolin Fierce Tiger Leaves Mountain
About
an hour,VCD pricing, Chinese Only
A very short form, basically two lines. This looks more like what
most people might think of a Southern Shaolin, something as a cross
between Mok Gar and Hung. Thought not as matured in his art, in
our opinion, as Zhou of the Zi Men branch, Huang is nonetheless
a clean performer. This should be an easy form to learn or analyze
for those wanting a brief introduction to the Southern branch and
its attributes. The 4th form of the style but the first presented.
Applications for some moves are discussed
and demonstrated.

A more sophisticated form with many crane hand movements and some
tiger claw actions. Southern style forms tend to be a little more
symmetrical than their Northern counterparts and this is no exception
with many phrases repeated in the other direction. Fast hands and
some specifically Southern hand positions. Applications,
a few, shown.

This might be an Okinawan set and sets like this could certainly
be the inspiration for that particular brand of expertise. Relatively
simple form with double bladed weapon - still learn carefully if
you try. A brief introduction to Southern Shaolin basics then the
form and the breakdowns. No applications this time.

Shaolin Bench Form
About

Were you interested in a good, basic Bench form of the Southern
Styles this would be a good starting point. Relatively simple but
with a few new and interesting moves, this Southern Shaolin form
is perfect for those long, drawn out fight scenes that start in
noodle houses. A solid, form - no applications shown. Requires a
little strength.

Shaolin Single Whip

This form, Single Whip, is the #2 Road of the Southern Shaolin system.
These forms are quite and refreshingly simple. But they have a certain
physical formalism which perfectly matches the general outlines
of Southern Kung Fu. Pauses abound and hand positions get so specific
that finger strikes are shown. Footwork is light, but sunken with
very little emphasis on kicking. Arm motions have strength but are
also often fluid. This is one of the shortest of the branch and
some applications are demonstrated.

Shaolin Turning Flower Staff
About
an hour,
,VCD pricing, Chinese Only
The Southern stick. Again the lead hand is the right, not the typical
left of the north. And this is not an "eyebrow" stick but a hand
held over the head length staff. Short set with many poses and some
nice moves. Much emphasis on using the butt end - the left - the
strike with upward swinging hits like elbow strokes. Also some applications
shown which lend interest because they are in the Southern manner
with more emphasis on short, jabbing motions on the attack. But
the correct elements of classical stick fighting are all preserved.

Qiang Bu. The forms in this branch are very short, maybe averaging
around 30 moves each. But this one, late in the series starts to
show the fuller potential of the style. We should note here that
though a lot of these series are "complete" in reality no real teacher
would give away everything for an eight disk series. Really. But
the specifics of the style seem to emerge more plainly around this
level such as body inclination, a lot of unusual crane hand techniques,
and some rather distinct uses of the Gua strikes. No applications
shown.

Chan Da. This form lives up to its name. Now the applications
shown have much less emphasis on grappling and more on immediate
response. Fast hands and quick slap, then hit techniques. This
is evident in the performance of the set also.
