Southern Style SHAOLIN Boxing- ZiMen Branch

Southern Shaolin is of course somewhat different from the Northern branch. Generally speaking there is less emphasis on kicks, especially of the jumping variety. Southern Shaolin has a distinct timing that floats between soft, whipping motions and sudden stops. The hands move constantly with sophisticated and unusual hand positions often requiring an "educated" wrist. Specific finger techniques are also shown. This particular branch is based on Eight Words or Characters. Many of the sets are based on two linked characters and emphasize those specific skills in execution. Some very beautiful and intricate hand motions are to be found here.

The basis of the Southern Shaolin style with surprising soft hand motions and very mobile steps mostly based on the open box pattern. A nice clear interplay between circular blocking and striking actions and very light step patterns. Basics include: Dragon Claw Palm; Horse Stance, Bow stance, Side Open step; Crane step, Triangle step, Circle step.

This is known as the Southern Shaolin spear/staff because the weapon could double as either. This is a longer-than-body-height weapon with fast footwork and some very nice turns. Also the stick is used in a whipping fashion occasionally. As often happens with Southern long weapons the lead is the right rather than the left hand and the thrust strikes rotate to issue directly from the middle of the chest. A very respectable performance.

Many, many applications are shown here. There is a distinct emphasis on throws and takedowns. Often coming from low dropping stances and unusual angle of grabbing the legs. Also, again commonly in Southern Style, the right hand is the lead. Strikes with elbows and evasions of kicks are shown, as are some Chin Nah locks some common but with a new approach.

A truly Southern form. Beautiful hand motions show a wide variety of positions: Dragon claws, Snake Hands, Crane wings, Shovel Hands, Dragon pokes. Also the flavorful stop-go-stop timing of the Southern Branches. Some large hand moves. As far as the nether regions very few kicks indeed, but very fast and fluid footwork. Not as "Hard" as Hung but firmly rooted in the Southern tradition. This set shows the Ba Shi, 10 hand basics and 5 leg actions. It is a compendium of the style.

This VCD shows a form embodying two important concepts of Southern Shaolin: Can Zi (Searching Character) and Tui Zi (Push Character). This is an intricate set with fast hands, freezes, pokes, monkey hands and much wrist action. Like all the other sets in this series other qualities are also employed such as Nian (Attaching), Ning (Twisting) and Gua (Hanging). But the main job here is to seek the leaks then Push forward.

This Southern Shaolin Form is based on the characters. The first is Yuan Zi (Upholding character) and the next is Tuo Zi (Snatching). This series once again shows fast hand moves with motions that push up and snatch down. This form also shows positional actions where you angle yourself in reference to the opponent to your advantage.

This Southern Shaolin Form is based on the characters. The first is Qian Zi (Leading) then Na Zi (Pressing). Movements here twist and pull, with snapping actions mixed with wide wing-like movements. Methods of leading and following the opponent's energy are explored along with Pressing at the appropriate time and angle.
