First,
be advised that all of these VCD's are IN
CHINESE ONLY. In our opinion that doesn't matter much
because the instruction is clear and the quality of photography
very good. But we will not accept returns just because people didn't
read... IN
CHINESE ONLY. Given
that, these are really tremendous deals for the money. Each of these
special VCD's can be played on a computer for full enjoyment. Made
for PC's they are also Mac compatible by downloading Quick time (for
free) and any similar VCD player program. Also playable on most
DVD players. For less than $10.00? Wow! |
YI
QUAN (Mind Boxing)
Yi
Quan (Mind Boxing) is also known as Da Cheng Quan (Great Achievement
Boxing). Though seemingly a simple system Yi Quan is subtle and
deep emphasizing mental training as much as physical. Though originally
derived from Xing-Yi Quan, this style simplifies even more completely
eliminating Tao Lu (forms). Rather than this traditional practice
Yi Quan has a number of other methods. These include Zhan Zhuang
(Standing meditation drills), Tui-Shou (Partner Exercises), San-Shou
(fighting training), Fa Li (Issuance of Power), and others, Shi
Li (testing force).
Yi
Quan puts a lot of time into training mind, fist and strength. To
accomplish this Yi Quan attempts to eliminate outdated practices
and approach Quan-Xue, that is to say the Science of Boxing. Yi
Quan sees three main approaches to martial studies for self defense,
health and the joy of study itself. By streamlining this process,
it is felt, more people can safely and enjoyably study the arts.
Students start with Standing exercises for health then progress
to standing exercises for self defense. Then begins its other methods
of single and partner practice.

VCD#1557 Yi Quan Standing Practice
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
In this series instructor Zhang Guang Yu breaks down Yi Quan with his own comments and tips. In this first VCD he shows the details of standing practice with variations and refinements. He also has students demonstrate the standing postures abilities to withstand blows with hand an foot and also the Peng energy which may turn a blocking action into a counter. His individual corrections are quite revealing and some of the postures are considerably more extreme than those generally shown. NOTE: Zhang Guang Yu presides over Xu Zhou HunYuan Wushu, Jiang su Province. He also sits on committee member for the Chinese Wudang Boxing Association.

VCD#1558 Yi Quan Trying Strength

VCD#1559 Yi Quan Fist and Foot Arts
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
The application of previous sections of training is the theme here. Zhang now shows the strikes, many derived from Xing Yi, of Yi Quan. There are sections of loose, playful striking where each major blow is demonstrated spontaneously. Actions are linked and footwork is scrutinized. |
VCD#1560 Yi Quan Introduction to Distant Power
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
This final VCD of this particular series shows the important Swimming Dragon practice of Yi Quan. It also shows a lot of hands on training much like Push Hands and Sticky Hands combined which, while exclusive to Yi Quan, is nonetheless intensely exploited by the style. Some quite useful discussions on angles, defense, strategies and the uses of the skills derived from the other phases of practice. To our mind Zhang is one of the clearest presenters of the style we have seen to this point. His demonstration of repelling energy with his body is one of the better examples we've seen of Yi Quan's Peng power. |

VCD#1534 Fostering Primordial Energy
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
A major component of Yi Quan practice is the use of standing and stationary exercises. One might say this is the main concept that makes Yi Quan "Chinese". This VCD gives a wide variety of methods for meditative posturing and goes into more variations than normally shown such as lying on one's side, seated, lying on one's back, etc. In essence the point is that any one may indeed practice Yi Quan regardless of restrictions. |
VCD#1535 Torn Tendons & Broken Bones
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
Recuperation after broken bones and torn tendons can certainly be aided by the proper exercises, massage and procedures. This shows Yi Quan's approach to this with an entire series of movements that move Qi and muscles. This is great for those who think that acupuncture is the totality of Chinese medicine. Nothing could be further from the truth and so many judgments are made on the efficacy of Chinese medicine when, in reality, only a thin slice of its range of options. This is the Chinese equivalent to Physical Therapy but, in many ways, is probably superior. |
VCD#457
Yi Quan Applications

Yi Quan Push Hands
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
This
aspect of the training, known as "Tui Shou" after its
T'ai Chi inspiration, is a series of partner movements that are
good exercise and yet safe for two-person practice. These movements
emphasize body alignment and subtlety of perception. They fit into
Yi Quan's overall scheme beautifully and give partner's a chance
to help one another to progress.

VCD#120
Yi Quan Free Hands
About 1 Hour, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
This
aspect of the training, known as "San Shou" which implies
"Free Hands" or applied self defense. This is a little
more straight forward from the self defense standpoint that its
sister method of "Tui Shou" or Push Hands. Yi Quan fighters
surprised many people in the 1920's with their powerful showings
in certain tournaments and, at the same time, their deceptively
simple methods of training: right out of the heart of their mother
system, Xing Yi.

Yi Quan style Testing Strength
Special Order, Chinese Only
This
is unusual for us. To our jaded eyes Li Zhao Shan does not appear
to have much talent or understanding. It just goes to show that
strong styles can have weak practitioners. In this lecture/demonstration
format in front of what looks like a revival meeting photo projection
Li stumbles, grunts and generally shows a low level of competence.
But as they say in the writing trade, some times you learn the
most from others' bad writing. If you disagree mail us your opinion.
We are always open to respectful dissent. Still, possibly useful
for Yi Quan enthusiasts.

Yi Quan ShiLi
Special Order, VCD pricing, Chinese Only
The
use and practice of power or force is a feature of Yi Quan training.
The force is built from the standing postures then issued. If linked
and spontaneous it takes, in some ways, the place of routines -
which Yi Quan - doesn't have. Again, health and fighting use essentially
the same structure with subtle differences. The demonstrator for
this series is Huang Jing Wen, a third generation practitioner.
