One of the numerous styles in the TongBei or Through-the-Back family of Kung Fu. This branch is known as White Ape, one of Tong Bei's earliest aliases. Though the demonstrator is old, many of these traditional movements are examples of TongBei, a famous fist.

At this level the applications demonstrated by teacher Zhang on his students are mostly control moves often with takedowns. He goes through not only the mechanics of entering, one of the toughest aspects of this type of technique, but also some instruction on points and angles. The progression in this style of Tong Bei is very logical. First conditioning, then partner forms, then direct applications. This VCD is based on two training devices: a short bench with a padded bag and a pole wrapped with an animal skin like a huge scratching post. The entire VCD shows training in the Tong Bei striking patterns against these items.

This is a TWO PERSON FORM. Now here's the problem. The form is actually pretty sophisticated with many hand exchanges, angular changes and soft parries. Teacher Zhang, getting up there in years, demonstrates with a much younger student and can only show the most cursory movement. The breakdown is better as the form is quite an involved partner set. But the demonstration leaves us wondering if slight bends were ducking actions and knee twitches were meant to be kicks.

Actually quite a good saber set. The first distinctive feature about this one is that it CHANGES HANDS a number of times throughout the form. That's right, the saber is switched from the right to the left hands and back again a number of times. The overall performance of the set is definitely a mark above the average in these disks. Every style has a characteristic weapon and saber is perfect for Tong Bei. The performance in the beginning puts it all together then teacher Zhang breaks everything down.

A long and rather fancy spear set. Many turns and hand changes, single legged stances, butt striking, rolls and twirls. The use of the waving back and other aspects of Tong Bei training are shown clearly in the demonstration of the set. Actual instruction from Master Zhang himself.
