By Shi Guo Song Shaolin chief Coach
Every branch of Shaolin has a Plum Flower Fist. This one is among the most popular of this form of Kung Fu. It is agile, fast, powerful and varied. Some specialties include a tight back spinning kick. Some nice changes and very classic Shaolin style lines and postures. Chin Nah movements are hidden in the form for those who can see them. A good intermediate level form with distinct Shaolin motions.

VCD#501 Shaolin style Small Hong Fist

Small and Large Hong Fist make the grade as authentic Shaolin because we have them in manuscript form for one thing and there is a rare unbroken line of instruction for them. This is a strong presentation of this simple and traditional fist. What it represents and shows is the strong, very ancient looking aspect of Shaolin which has become the "official" look of Shaolin. This is somewhat unfortunate to our minds because it denies the sophistication Shaolin developed in the latter centuries. This threatens to make Shaolin a "relic" rather than a style. Nonetheless this is an good presentation of this historically key set.

This set, along with Small Hong Fist, are requirements for any beginners in the many Shaolin schools around the Temple. Extremely compact this single-line form works in a very small area. It introduces many basic moves and yet contains some unusual and tricky hand actions, particularly the "fans". Like Small Hong this one is documented with both written text and an unbroken lineage of instruction for centuries and is, therefore, considered one of the rare, unquestionably authentic forms of the style.

VCD#507 Shaolin style 6 Combinations/ChanYong Gong
About 1 Hour, See Main VCD page for prices, Chinese/English

These exercises demonstrated by the same practitioner who showed in Shaolin Rou Gong #2, are simple walking forms of healthful Chi Kung. Much of the routine looks like variations on the Brush Knee and Twist Step of Tai Chi with mouth-open breathing and light steps. Definitely a do-able routine. Not difficult for any potential player.

VCD#502 Shaolin style Rou Gong - One
About 1 Hour, See Main VCD page for prices, Chinese/English

This is the Tai Chi of Shaolin. Rou Quan (soft fist) sounds similar to one of the original names of Tai Chi, Rou Gong (soft work). Three Rou sections were believed to be created by the famous monk Hui Ke, the second abbot of Shaolin after Bodhidharma. It is generally taught to senior monks and its soothing and soft motions are considered excellent for older marital artists wishing to retain their skills. This first fist is derived from the old Shaolin LuoHan set and contains all of the 13 essential movement which were the building blocks of that famous form. This is an advanced form. We consider this a good form, sort of Tan Tui meets Tai Chi. Up and back walking through roads with some simple Chi Kung and others showing definite energy issuance. A soft Shaolin set thatÕs still Shaolin.

It is generally taught to senior monks and because of its soothing and soft motion is considered excellent for older marital artists who wish to retain their skills. This Second Part is at a completely different level than part one. Definitely an advanced form though soft it takes complexity to another level. This time itÕs more like Tan Tui meets Tai Chi with a little Praying Mantis thrown in. A long form with many changes this is one of the more impressive soft sets associated with Shaolin for traditional movement, ingenuity and sophistication. The teacher is old with a nice big belly but his skill is evident in every move . NOTE: This VCD comes in either of two covers. We send what's in stock.

VCD#505 Shaolin style VIRGIN BOY EXERCISE

by Shi YongDe & XingChao
The second film in the Shaolin Temple series is known as Shaolin Little guys, Shaolin TongZi Gong, also the name of this VCD. These are from exercises legendary to be taught to young boys before their cartilage ossifies into adult bone. This is the reason for the "virgin" aspect. Many of the exercises in this VCD are nothing short of astonishing. This is the kind of Kung Fu we havenÕt seen for a long time. The contortionist aspects will turn off many people (thereÕs a left twist that might may your skin crawl). But this is true, accurate Kung Fu along the lines of Yogic discipline. Everything else aside, while these just look like a renegade from Cirque DÕSoleil the particular choice of exercises shows the extreme sophistication of knowing Chinese medicine and which postures would, according to theory, preserved and refine the practitionerÕs Yung Chi (original Chi). We wonÕt say "donÕt try this at home" because it doesnÕt matter where you try it, you wonÕt be able to do all these exercises.

By Shi YongXin
Shaolin Cannon Fist is a famous set of the system. Such luminaries as Shi ZhenJun, Wu ShanLin, Shi DeGen and Shi XingShu were said to be experts in the art. The form is powerful and elegant, with unusual and simple hand motions mixed. ItÕs feeling invokes the essence of Shaolin Fist. This performance is good with a reserve and a strength of stance and posture not often seen nowadays. Straight simple lines of Shaolin done in a thoughtful and sincere manner. it doesnÕt matte where you try it, you wonÕt be able to do all these exercises.
