CHUO JIAO (Penetrating Foot) Boxing 戳脚

Demonstrator: Hong Zhi Tian or Zhang Ji Zong.

Somewhat resembling Xing Yi in its directness; something like Northern Shaolin for its kicking skills: Chuo Jiao (Penetrating Kick) is one of the oldest recorded styles of Kung Fu still in existence. Chuo Jiao has been around along time and "married" with many styles such as Fan Tzi or Tumbling Boxing where it has also developed a distinctly gymnastic flair. There is also a branch of Shaolin style Chuo Jiao represented below. NOTE: We now have a Second Page for those who are interested in this style.

With Hong Zhi-Tien. It’s been a while since we’ve offered an addition to our Chuo Jiao collection. Here is a good, solid sword offering in the Chuo Jiao manner. This traditional set has surprisingly few kicks considering the style but it does have a number of interesting changes such as switching the sword from one hand to another. This teacher, the main one for the series, shows the break down of the form utilizing a larger weapon than is normally shown. Overall a good series with higher level practitioners.

Just a whole lot of demonstration of the Chuo Jiao (Penetrating Foot) Fan Zi (Tumbling Boxing style. Gives an overview of the forms including weapons sets. One of the most interesting is a combination of a staff and a comet. There are a number of Pu Dao sets, straight sword, a respectable spear, saber, etc. And then there's the distinctive forms of the Chuo Jiao unarmed section. A good over view.

One branch of Fan Zi (Yen Qing) has a number of forms. This is the second set representative of that branch, Three Blocks Fist. Yen Qing almost always doubles for Mi Zong, or "Lost Track" and this set, though easier than the others as far as the demands on kicking, could easily represent the Lost Track style since the angles and turns are highly evident. Essentially a set of basic movements but in a very comfortable and fluid form with some fancy footwork indeed.

Yao Mo Tui. A branch of Fan Zi Quan is known as "Small Fan Zi" and this introduces its first form . Teacher Hong calls this set "unusally pretty." Be that as it may, the movements and frame are a little more conservative. Some of Chuo Jiao kicking is creeping into the Fan Zi here but there is an emphasis on tight hand motions and whirling wrists.

Another aspect of Fan Zi is known as "Da Fan ZI" or Large Tumbling Boxing. This set introduces the first form of that branch with an emphasis on forceful moves and large frame actions. This set is fluid and definitely not simple. Some of the Long Fist feeling of, say, Cha Chuan with many turns, very loose shoulder, either high or low kicks, and some easy but explosive power. An intermediate to advanced set for most.

In the general family of "Da Dao" or Big Knives, Pu Dao is one of our favorites. It is fast and more active than the more famous Kuan Dao. Lively and fast it resembles the actions of the "Bandit Knife" of Water Margin fame. In this set you actually get TWO forms, one more advanced than the first.

Demonstrated here by teacher Hong Zhi-Tian, this is truly one of the few times this style has ever been seen in the West. It is often "married" to the famous kicking and tumbling style known as Fan Tzi (yes, the same Fan Tzi that is incorporated into Eagle Claw style). This VCD concentrates on patterns of partner practice and self defense in the no-nonsense way of Chuo Jiao.

Three absolutely fascinating forms with kicks so flexible they look like performing PiGua with the legs. You need a limber spine for this style with it back-forward positioning and the famous back swinging Chuo Jiao kick. Each of these short but very demanding sets has some really beautiful kicks at unusual angles mixed with very fast hands and much extremely agile footwork. A style with skillful practitioners and many exciting moves. A Double VCD.

Kao Nan Lien. This is a complex and interesting set where there are many fluid movements often imitating animals. Among these imitative boxing moves are those of roodter, snake, tiger and dragon. This is demonstated by one of Hong's students - a Westerner - who does a very good job. Many kicks, whirling arms, unusual angles, fluid steps: a difficult form but nicely constructed and with a noteable range of changes and differing qualities.

This "Short Hand" form is really quite something. Imagine a combination of Xing Yi, animal styles, long fist and some excellent kicks. Lots of difficult movements but not silly gymnastics just complex kicks and unusual timing for the Long Fist whipping motions. Very good skills, difficult actions and Fan Zi's famous semi-acrobatic motions. Worth a look.

The Fundamentals disk in this series is about striking. This one is about the basic patterns themselves including strikes, kicks, jumps, steps and other building blocks to this famous style of Kung Fu. To be honest these "basics" are going to be more than basic to most people. They contain some difficult almost acrobatic kicks, ground spinning moves, heavy weight leg training and more. Definitely flavorful and not to be confused with generic basics that could fit any style. Straight FanZi Chuo Jiao.

Cross Training is nothing new, despite the magazines. Tong Bei is well-known for having many influences just as it influenced much of martial history. Here a fiesty TongBei teacher, this fellow is lively if nothing else, shows the Penetrating Foot. As with much Chuo Jiao the kicks are everything and the form shown is more a series of movements. Chuo Jiao is now identified with Fan Tzi of Tumbling Boxing so expect a few cartwheels from Zhang's competent student. Is there a "Shaolin" style Chuo Jiao. The records say Yes indeed.

Chuo-Jiao Lian-Huan Tui.
As the name implies the Intercepting Leg linked form emphasizes footwork. There are a lot of double hand motions, fast footwork. The name of the set implies not so much just single kicks as the coordination of leg actions with complex hand movements, many of them Chin Nah type. Applications on this tape, against hands and weapons, emphasize kicking responses. This is a "Chuo Jiao" form (the style of Chuo Jiao has been absored through the centuries into all kinds of other fists) as a component of the Zi-Wu Men.
