WU Style TAI CHI

Two forms of Tai Chi are known in English as "Wu". Though the characters are different in Chinese they are most often spelled the same in English.

Demonstrators: Li Bing Ci early on learned Tai Chi, TongBei, Xingyi Quan and other forms from many famous boxers such as Yang Yu Ting, Shi Zheng Gang, Luo Xingwu, Shan Xiang Ling and Liu Tan Feng. He has been appointed as the the vice chairman of the Tokyo Tai Chi Association. Li is presently a member of China Wushu Coaching Association and Beijing Wushu Association respectively. He is also vice president of Beijing Wu-family Tai Chi Quan Reserach Institute.

ZHAN BO: (VCDs 1625-1628) Zhan Bo was in that rare group of individuals who refused to kowtow to the official versions of martial arts. In his case he "moved" to HeiLongJiang province in the Sixties. There he "protected" the Wu style he had learned until the political cliimate reversed. He is now, ironically, considered a "national treasure". His lineage dates back to the famous Wang Mao Zhai, through Xiu Pei Xun to his own fourth generation status.

Wang Fu Qi does the Tai Chi of Yang Yu Ting (1887-1982).
Sifu Yang was not the warlord who collaborated with the Japanese and died in 1929. Instead this is the teacher of Li Bing Zi (for 37 years) and many others. Yang worked with Wong Mao Zhai. Yang was a top teacher in Beijing. He gained a good understanding of Quan You’s tyle from studying with Wong. Later he became vice chairman of the Beijing Martial Arts Association. This popular teacher and standardizer instructed Wang Pei Sheng, Li Jing Wu, and Li Bing Zi. His student, Wang Fu Qi, was a collaborator with Li Bin Zi on a text devoted to Tai Chi and weapons. This double disk set does indeed have a large section of instructional material, in Chinese, from Wang himself discussing the basic principles of good Tai Chi he learned from Yang Yu Ting. Then there is instruction on his classical, inclined Wu style of Tai Chi. Occasionally there are inserted sections of Wang as a younger man when the form requires a more energetic representation.

Very good clean work. A few surprises but unstintingly solid work with many, many practical and clear applications combining striking, grappling and fa jin. The fa jin demonstrations are always problematic for people: can they be applied? How much is the student cooperating? But the basics of body and bone alignment are valid and useful to improve one’s skill. Many key movements from Wu style well explained from someone with educated hands.

Wu Style Tai Chi Broadsword is called "13 Taiji Saber Actions" focusing on the combination of basic and essential actions which constitute the form. The Wu-family-style Tai Chi Saber is strong, fluid and precise. Similar to the Yang version some of the actions are - in our opinion - truer to the historical usage of the weapon. Li Shihfu himself teaches with an able demonstrator to show the transitions.
