What
can you say? We have long been admirers of this style, one of the
great Southern Fists. CLF has 190 sets and is composed of the union
of three major systems along with the LuoHan Chi Kung. This Australian
based teacher is an inheritor of the complete style. Much of the
instruction is in ENGLISH (though heavily
accented) and Cantonese. The energy and dedication of the Australian
students fills the air with the smell of enthusiasm. A great, uplifting
series for the Kung Fu lover.

This is a "general" Choy Lai Fut set demonstrated by Luo ZhiHong and Li Wei Fen. It seems odd but official Northern based WuShu practitioners seem only moderately successful at the Southern Fists. Has anyone else noticed this. First, you should know that Northern stylists don't all dislike Southern Fists. We, for instance, not only have studied but admire good Southern practitioners. The fact that this is a gold medallist pair is a great example of what's wrong with contemporary WuShu because, unlike so many of the Northern sets, many people in the West are familiar with Southern styles and can, with their own eyes, see the limitations of these representative stylists. Still, might be an interesting addition for a Southern Fist collector.

A long and interesting set of warm up, stretches initially with metal staves covering a lot of excellent movements in the CLF manner to unify the arms and waist. Then, drawing on what Chen ShihFu obviously considers one of his treasure, many Hei Kung movements from the LuoHan type exercises emphasizing a softness rarely associated with CLF but perfectly logical to the style. All this is done in seminar fashion with many of Chen's 4000 plus students. A short section of a rarely seen Butterfly Knives vs. Metal Staff. Then a rendition with instruction on CLF's own version of Tai Chi fist. A vigorous series of VCDs with, we might add, Australian students showing the type of heart and effort that will bring them to a fine standing in the Kung Fu community.

6 Breaths BaGua Ball. A very unusual and interesting Chi Kung. To
our eyes this one harkens back to the kind of Kung Fu we rarely
see any more, village and "beneficent society" rather than urban
or military. A big ball is placed in the middle of the room and
the set is done "to" the ball using the spherical shape as a model
for movements. Certainly more Hei Kung than fighting but with CLF's
lucid and strong flavor nonetheless. This is actually an important

VCD#307 Choy Lai Fut Yin Yang Sword & Saber

combination set with a left-handed straight sword and a right saber
(appropriate to Yin and Yang hands). This is done seminar style
with Chen ShihFu teaching as he goes in English and Chinese. An
actually nice set with CLF flavor and correct movements for the
two weapons unlike so many hybrid sets. No demonstration of the
whole set but rather like attending his class and learning along
with him. But logical breakdowns and clear demonstration of sections.

Unicorn Hand and 18 LuoHan exercises .A workshop type demonstration of the 18 LuoHan Chi Kung also with the aid of a large ball for "focusing" the energy. The later half of the VCD is a demonstration of the CLF equivalent of Push Hands combined with Chin Na. This series of movements we suspect to be the introductory or volleying of what could develop into a pretty free form style of tactile Chin Na practice. This demonstration is a breakdown, also workshop style, of the somewhat complicated but very interesting two person practice. As in this series much of the instruction is in ENGLISH if, sometimes, a bit hard to understand.

Standing and performing in front of a HUGE banner in red with a blazing yellow "WU" this troupe of Choy Lai Fut players and other practitioners shows off a survey of styles reminiscent of the halcyon days in the States.
