SHAOLIN Secret Boxing -
SC 603
by
Various
$13.95 Simplified Chinese Characters Only
367 Pages, Softbound. Illustrated.
This is a series of forms which come from the core of the
Shaolin tradition. Unlike many they do not look as "primitive"
as many forms recorded and represented as Shaolin. They far
more resemble the famous 10 Road Shaolin of Gu Ru Zhang though
they are not the same. This raises an interesting point in
that a 1500 year history implies definite development and
evolution. Is old Shaolin more accurate than newer Shaolin?
In this case the answer is no. We could write at length about
this but the basic argument is that Shaolin only really became
famous in the Ming dynasty. Previous to that it was more of
a compendium than a style. In our opinion the latter movements
more closely resemble a consistent style than the earlier.
Of course there's the argument that the true core was the
collection of diverse forms, not their "aggregation."
At some time we'll go on about this but take it that this
little illustrated text has quite a number
of forms. |
SHAOLIN

Shaolin FengMo Gun Chan Zong. This is really quite interesting.
This entire book is on Shaolin stick work with numerous forms
shown accompanied by excellent illustrations. The point is
that all the stick work represented is REVERSE gripped; that
is to say held backwards sticking out the opposite part of the
hand. This is sometimes called Negative or "Yin" style
staff work. It is also associated with "reverse" and
therefore sometimes called "evil" spirits. |
