Bibliography: Simplified Chinese Page 3
The
history of Kung Fu is just being assembled. Sometimes a picture,
or a small description can indeed help with the research. Here,
presented for the aid of the interested, is a collection of
pictures and descriptions. We have no idea if these will ever
be available again in any form. They do record a very important
phase of Chinese WuShu when publishing was just beginning in
the field. We welcome contributions to this section from other
collectors. |

back of the book with a short series of photos that duplicate
the chart information and directional boxes to show foot angles.

BAOJIAN TAIJIQUAN
by Liu

Chinese Characters Only
186 Pages, Softbound. Photographs.
Using Wu style as a base this Tai Chi teacher emphasizes Tai
Chi's curative benefits. These health-oriented books are often
"watered down" versions of Tai Chi. However Mr. Liu's form is
excellent, even though the photos are only fair. Born in 1911
Mr. Liu has an upright body and excellent shape on his moves.
There are supplementary notes on the form and also the principles
of Tai Chi practice. |

SHAOLIN QIGONG
by Lin Hou-Shen
Simplified Chinese Characters
74 Pages,
Softbound. Photographed,
1987 (this ed. 1988).
Chinese medicine states that all the meridians feed into the
hands. This pretty authentic looking series of exercises is
based on Shaolin and seems relatively accurate. One interesting
and simple Chi Kung utilizes the sequential bending of each
finger separately. We were told of a very similar exercise by
George Xu (Xu Guo Ming) performed by a friend of his, one of
the top Push Hands champions of China. Photographs only the
cloudy side and these books are a little worn but otherwise
good. Male and female demonstrators. |

by
Ma Hong
Simplified Chinese Characters Only
393 Pages, Softbound. Clear line drawings.
We
recommend this book for CHINESE readers since it is almost
entirely text. The illustration you will see if you Click
Picture is one of the very few accompanying this text. Ma
Hong is a great Tai Chi teacher: dynamic, dedicated, traditional
and skilled. We were lucky enough to work with him at a semianr
years ago and saw a man approaching 70 peforming jump kicks
half splits and other techniques with accuracy and skill.
On top of that he has kept his integrity in an enviorment
where pressure has created many so-so teachers showing mediocre
art. Topics covered include: Internal Work, Body Mechanics,
the reception of Tai Chi in America and commentary by ShihFu
Ma on the Classics. But this one is for Chinese readers only. |
BAFA Style Boxing and Spear - SC 5170995 Not

by
Zheng QiLong
Simplified Chinese Characters
215 Pages, Softbound. Line drawings.
BaFa
is an interesting combination of methods taken from Xing Yi,
PiGua, Fan Zi, Tong Bi, Tan Tui and Canon Punch. It was developed
in the Ching Dynasty by Li DeMao. Besides single and two person
sets it contains the four "grandparent" weapons. This
style is composed of 8 methods (Ba Fa) such as Thrust, Ward
Off, Split, Change, Stick, Twist, Raise and Wrap. The practitioner,
Wu ShihLu, is skilled with the form resembling Cha and showing
a wide range of hard and soft techniques mixed with some of-set
timing resembling Canon Fist. This is probably one of the only
books available on this style in any language. It shows a single
hand set, a partner set and BaFa Spear. Nicely illustrated. See our BaFa VCD. |

This
THE book on Da Cheng as far as illustrations, and complete representation
of the style. This is a big book, over 11 inches tall. It starts
with Color plates in the frontispiece then illustrates all the
principle practices of the style with over 300 decently sized
photographs. Not only are the seven essential practices discussed
but da Cheng principles with the straight sword and the staff
including striking a pole with the staff for practice. Most
of our copies are in excellent condition with an occasional
bent back corner from the way the lot was packed. |

by Li ZhaoShan
Simplified Chinese Characters
281 Pages, Softbound. Photographs.
This
volume, with over 500 photographs, shows the applied side of
Ta Cheng Quan. Sequences of three and four photos show breakdowns
on the application of this method to the art of self defense.
Generally, the photos are good, and the illustration of the
movements clear. A lot of information for the price. |
Introduction
to WU style TAI CHI -
SC 5200695 Not
for Sale
by
Wu YingHua and Ma YueLiang
Simplified Chinese Characters Only
47 Pages,
Softbound. over
120 Photographs.
Here's a little volume that is cheaply made,
with so-so photos. It is thin on inexpensive paper. Since
all of our stock is old the copies are a little beaten-upon.
And WHY should you buy it? Because this is an humble text
written about 1982 with Wu YingHua and Ma YueLiang (Wu doing
the photos) and it is probably one of the first pieces produced
by them on the Wu style. It is oftent he case that the first
time martial artists publish the little gems they produce
are inexpensive and never assumed to be meant for posterity.
Were we WU stylists we would HAVE to have this in our library.
In this case we're taking one anyway leaving just a few copies.
This is a shortened set of around 30 moves but there she is,
performing them for the future. |

Zhang Jin Liang
Simplified Chinese Characters Only
170 pages,
Softbound, photographs.
This is a very clear and informative volume
of the Li Zi Ming tradition in the Liang branch of Ba Gua
Zhang. Zhang's applications, through photographs, are strong
though we could have used more breakdowns.
We have long considered Zhang to be a hard working and dedicated
proponent of this form of Ba Gua Boxing.
Check out his VCDs.
Look at his DVDs. |

by
Liu WanYi
Simplified Chinese Characters Only
367 Pages, Softbound. Illustrated.
People are constantly asking us "does this or that contain
application." Of course the LEVEL of application is the
real key to Kung Fu. Sly instructors long ago created so many
various and diverse levels of meaning that the discussion on
usage is as bad as the "official version" of Parker's
Long Four. But if you want a simple, clear text with good illustrations
of the basic Level one strikes, grapples and throws of WuShu,
you could so worse indeed than this little book. |

pages, Soft bound, Photographs.
We
have a number of books on the popular art Da Cheng Quan (Great
Achievement Boxing) but very few as complete as this edition.
There aren't a lot of illustrations but quite a number of
pictures of Da Cheng practitioners, important teachers like
Yang Chen Fu, some techniques including "Empty Chi",
Da Cheng's health methods, memoirs, the evolution of Da Cheng
from Xing Yi, practicing the art, the "non-mysterious"
approach to Chi Kung and much more. |

Liu
He Da Chiang:Having
practiced something much like this ourselves we can say the
following: many people call spear the King of the Long Weapons.
They are thinking, of course, about its dominant history on
the battlefield. But the Spear is also the king of weapons
for practicing Kung Fu. And the Long Spear is the best of
them all. This book attempts to give a lot of background on
the weapon. it includes a form, then extensive notes on two
person applications of the basic energies, some historical
records and other background. A must for someone interested
in this aspect of Kung Fu. |
